The curious play of awareness and focus in Olympics

India doesn’t have good track record in Olympics.  My generation grew up without probably seeing a single medal in Olympics. Most Indian consumed the sport opiate of South Asia, Cricket.

Still, there were some black sheep like me who refused to get drugged in the delusion of self-importance by an occasional victory of Cricket world cup. We kept seeing whatever sports we could. We knew Sergei Bubka and Nadia Comaneci. We cheered whoever showed talent.

That is how we thought we imbibed the value of Chhandogya Upanishad –

अयम् निजः परोवैति गणनाम् लघुचेतसाम्

उदारचरितनाम् तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्

[Thinking “This is mine and that is yours is narrow-mindedness. To the magnanimous, the world is a family.”]

How wrong we were!

Since last three Olympics, India is on an upwardly momentum on getting medals.

This time, I want to watch only the matches India plays.

What a change!

What does it mean? It is very easy to talk broad and generous when your hat isn’t in game. The moment one becames aware (and sure) of our ability, one gets focused.
